What people need to understand about SEO, and what most people don't, is that no matter how well you optimize your site it only counts for about 20% of how Google values it within SERP (Search Engine Result Pages).
On site SEO, including meta tags like Title Description and Keywords, as well as Header tags and so on make up that 20% and out of that believe me when I tell you your meta tags are on the low end of this.
Off site SEO factors like the age of your domain, frequency of pages updates, your IP block, how stable your domain is (how many years its registered for), and several other factors make up 40% of how Google values your page.
Finally Page Rank PR, makes up the other 40% of how your page is valued. This MOSTLY will come down to links to and from your site, your overall site traffic, and the growth rate of your site traffic, as well as several other factors that I can't just tell you about for nothing.
So those of you who are business owners, stop riding your web designer about why you aren't in the top of google despite changing your meta tags. Its not enough and if you aren't actively creating new fresh relevant content, building links and relationships with other sites, participating in social media marketing, releasing online PR's, or buying PPC advertising, you have a lot of work cut out for you if you want to make it to the top.
Those of you who are web designers or developers. Do a bit of homework and focus on devising an appropriate SEO strategy to server your purposes rather than using individual tactics ineffectively.
