Jewish American Heritage Month, 2006
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America
When the first Jewish settlers came to this land, they sought a place of promise where they could practice their faith in freedom and live in liberty. During Jewish American Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich history of the Jewish people in America and honor the great contributions they have made to our country.
As a nation of immigrants, the United States is better and stronger because Jewish people from all over the world have chosen to become American citizens. Since arriving in 1654, Jewish Americans have achieved great success, strengthened our country, and helped shape our way of life. Through their deep commitment to faith, family, and community, Jewish Americans remind us of a basic belief that guided the founding of this Nation: that there is an Almighty who watches over the affairs of men and values every life. The Jewish people have enriched our culture and contributed to a more compassionate and hopeful America.
Jewish American Heritage Month is also an opportunity to remember and thank the many Jewish Americans who defend our ideals as members of the United States Armed Forces. These courageous men and women risk their lives to protect their fellow citizens and to advance the cause of freedom. By helping to bring the promise of liberty to millions around the world, they lay the foundation of peace for generations to come.
NOW, THEREFORE, I GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 2006 as Jewish American Heritage Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities that honor the significant contributions Jewish Americans have made to our Nation.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twentieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.
GEORGE W. BUSH

BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH
Central Library, Apr 29, 2005 — BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY
CELEBRATES JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH
Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) celebrates Jewish Heritage Month with a series of cultural programs at the Central Library including informative lectures, compelling author talks and an evening of poetry led by noted authors, academics and poets. People of all ages will enjoy the array of programs, all focused on the Jewish experience, ranging from an inspiring lecture on preserving Yiddish books to poems reflecting "The Voices of Genesis: Family Feuds and Tortured Love." Events run throughout the month of May.
"Brooklyn Public Library is proud to continue its traditional month-long celebration of Jewish Heritage with prominent Jewish figures and noted experts on Jewish heritage from Brooklyn and beyond," says Ginnie Cooper, Executive Director, Brooklyn Public Library. "Our series of unique cultural programs honors the Jewish experience and many contributions to society."
Several author talks explore different aspects of Jewish heritage. Aaron Lansky, author of Outwitting History: How One Man Rescued A Million Books and Saved A Civilization, shares inspiring and hilarious tales about his travels across the country on a quest to save Yiddish books from attics, basements and dumpsters. Author of Jewish American Literature: A Guide to Reading Interests, Rosalind Reisner, discusses literature that captures the remarkable stories of Jewish immigrants who recreated themselves in the American image, and in the process, played an integral role in shaping American culture.
Movie icon Eli Wallach shares excerpts from his memoir, The Good, The Bad, and Me. The Tony Award winner chronicles his career in the footlights and on camera from his beginnings in Brooklyn to his days as one of the first members of the famed Actors Studio.
"The Voices of Genesis: Family Feuds and Tortured Love," an evening of poetry, features readings by poets Lois Adams, Patricia Markert and Brooklyn natives Barbara Elovic and Constance Norgren, collaborative authors of To Genesis: Poems. Critics have deemed the series of persona poems "witty retellings" of the classic stories in the voices of familiar Genesis characters, such as Eve, Cain and Esau, as well as lesser known characters such as Tamar.
Morris Dickstein, Distinguished Professor of English at CUNY's Graduate Center, presents a fascinating lecture, "Shadows: I.B. Singer and the Holocaust", on the response of prolific Yiddish novelist I.B. Singer to the Holocaust. He explores the theory that Singer experienced guilt over his own escape of the Holocaust.

MIAMI - In a history-making moment, President George W. Bush is expected next week to proclaim May of every year as Jewish American Heritage Month.
The proclamation will be the culmination of months of work by U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., who pushed resolutions through the House and Senate that urged Bush to take action. That’s no small feat for a first-term Demo-crat.
Now it’s up to school districts, museums and community groups to make the symbolic designation meaningful. Wasserman Schultz wants these institutions to raise awareness about Jewish contributions to American life, as they have done with Black History Month and Women’s History Month.
"We’ve all observed a precipitous rise in bigotry and anti-Semitism across the country and globally," said Wasserman Schultz. "If through educational and cultural programming we can foster understanding and tolerance, that would be a significant accomplishment."
The month of May will replace the little-known Jewish American Heritage week in April that has been proclaimed annually by presidents - including Bush - since 1980. May was chosen because it does not include any major Jewish holidays.
"There will be no religious emphasis," Wasserman Schultz said. "It will be purely cultural and educational, so we didn’t want it tied to any particular Jewish holiday."
The U.S. House of Representatives put a stop to laws commemorating a certain period of time in 1995, responding to the deluge of members seeking a symbolic way to connect with certain constituents or special-interest groups. But lawmakers still ask the president frequently to issue proclamations, and he has honored Irish Americans, the Wright brothers and family caregivers.
Bush courted Jewish voters, who traditionally lean Democratic, during his two presidential campaigns. He began an annual Hanukkah celebration at the White House. Before last year’s event, the White House brought in a team of three rabbis to oversee the cleansing of the kitchen and preparation of kosher food.
"The president recognizes the importance of celebrating Jewish-American contributions to the nation," said White House spokesman Blair Jones.
Wasserman Schultz will officially announce Jewish American Heritage Month at a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach. The museum’s founding executive director, Marcia Zerivitz, worked closely with Wasserman Schultz.
"We don’t want to forget the larger story of immigration and that everyone has come from somewhere else," Zerivitz said. "American Jews have contributed so much, and we thought we should have a month to commemorate that."

National ‘Jewish Heritage Month’ appears closer to reality

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | (KRT) Hoping to highlight the contributions of Jewish culture to the nation, a determined group of South Floridians is leading a campaign to create an American Jewish History Month.
With backing from Congress and President Bush, their dream appears headed for reality. Every January, schoolchildren throughout Florida study the long, sometimes painful, but always productive Jewish history of their state. An American Jewish history month would expand that cross-cultural experience on a national scale.
Prompted by U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., the House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution urging the president to proclaim an American Jewish History Month. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., plans to push the same resolution through the Senate.
But only the president can make such a proclamation, and Bush intends to designate what he prefers to call "Jewish Heritage Month" to be celebrated sometime in the spring. That would expand past proclamations of "Jewish Heritage Week," which last year was in May.
Most people, even Jews, equate Jews with the Holocaust. American Jewish history has taken a backseat.
— Marcia Zerivitz, director of the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach, one of the leading promoters of Jewish History Month
"The president realizes the importance of recognizing American Jewish contributions to this nation," White House spokesman Blair Jones said. The White House is working closely with House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., and Wasserman Schultz to decide how best to celebrate, including picking a month.
Promoters hope to build momentum for a Jewish equivalent to Black History Month, which is celebrated in February. They see an opportunity to burnish pride in Jewish contributions to American society while also helping non-Jews understand the culture, holidays and history of a small but influential minority.
"Most Americans don't have much exposure to Jewish people, who make up less than 2 percent of the population," Wasserman Schultz said in an interview. "This would be a chance for kids who do not have contact with Jews to at least know what their contributions and culture are about."
She and other promoters envision festivals, exhibits and school programs. A curriculum on Jewish history would be provided to schools across the country, much like the one in Florida.
At Lake Worth Community High School, for example, students learn that Jewish settlers came to Florida as early as 1763. Florida Sen. David Levy Yulee, who helped write the state constitution, became the first Jewish member of the U.S. Senate in 1845. And after World War II, a Jewish migration flowed into South Florida, now home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the world.
Students also discuss their perceptions of Jewish retirees and "snowbirds" who flock to South Florida in the winter.
"We try to get rid of preconceived notions," said Meryl Preston, a teacher at the school. "We discuss why people talk the way they talk, including some slang words. The message is that it's OK to be different."
At Loggers' Run Middle School in Boca Raton, which has a larger Jewish population than the high school, students are engaged in a reading program with Israeli students over the Internet, while also learning facts about Jewish history. "If the children are Jewish, they are very proud," teacher Maureen Marullo said. "Many have come from the North, and they are proud to know that Jewish people played a part in Florida history."
In Florida, which began celebrating Jewish History Month in 2003, these lessons often are interwoven with Holocaust studies, which schools by law are required to teach. However, promoters of a nationwide celebration would rather stress Jewish history in this country.
"The Holocaust has overshadowed all of this," said Marcia Zerivitz, director of the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach, one of the leading promoters of Jewish History Month. "It's such an emotional thing. Most people, even Jews, equate Jews with the Holocaust. American Jewish history has taken a backseat."
Lessons about anti-Semitism and discrimination inevitably must be included in any study of Jewish history in Florida, the nation and the world.
"This is not to be denied, not forgotten," Zerivitz said. "But what we are focusing on are the good things, the contributions Jews have made. We want to give young Jews a sense of pride in what our people have accomplished."

National Month Recognizing Jewish Heritage to be Announced Monday in South Florida
Rep. Wasserman Schultz to announce Jewish American Heritage Month, recognizing over 350 years of contributions to American culture by Jewish community.
Creation of month is cumulative effort by South Floridians.
April 21, 2006
Miami Beach, FL -- History will be made this Monday when Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and local Jewish community leaders, Marcia Zerivitz, Michael Adler and Stanley Tate announce that President Bush will be proclaiming May as Jewish American Heritage Month, fashioned after other months like Black History Month and Women’s History Month.
“For over 350 years, American culture has been deeply enriched by the contributions of Jews,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “While only 2% of the population, Jews have played a vital role in every aspect of American culture, from the westward expansion to advances in medicine to such quintessentially American symbols as the song God Bless America.”
Many Americans have little understanding of Jewish culture simply because the majority of Americans have few interactions with Jews or Jewish traditions. The ignorance of Jewish culture can lead to prejudice and discrimination. Jewish American Heritage Month will provide an opportunity to educate all Americans about Jewish culture and traditions and will highlight the many positive roles Jews have played in American history and culture.

September is Jewish Heritage Month in Fairfax County
The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington has announced that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is designating September, 2004, as Jewish Heritage Month in Fairfax County, marking the 350th anniversary of Jews in America. Jewish community leaders will receive a special proclamation on Sept. 13, 2004, at 9:30 a.m., in the Board Auditorium of the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Va., that will indicate the many civic and cultural Jewish contributions to Fairfax County. Marcia Kerchner, a Northern Virginia resident and Federation board member, and Warren Cohen, president, Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia, will receive the proclamation on behalf of the Northern Virginia Jewish community. Kerchner also serves as chair of Federation's Jewish in Northern Virginia Affinity Network. Individuals are welcome to attend the presentation of this honor to Northern Virginia's Jewish community.
Historical documents have confirmed the first Jews arrived in North America in 1654 from Recife, Brazil. During the past 3 ½ centuries, Jewish Americans have helped shape the history and culture of the United States, contributing courage, perseverance, faith, vision and values to the nation.
A recent demographic study of the Greater Washington, D.C. Jewish community discovered significant growth in the Northern Virginia Jewish community in the past two decades. As a result, Federation is providing enhanced outreach to Jews in Northern Virginia, as well as, organizing additional Jewish programming and educational and social opportunities.

Jewish American Heritage Month Proclaimed as May
This May marks the first time for national month recognizing the 352 year history of
Jews' contributions to American culture
Wasserman Schultz resolution resulted from South Florida awareness effort
April 25, 2006
(Miami Beach, FL) -- A celebratory mood at the Jewish Museum of Florida marked the first public announcement of a national month recognizing the accomplishments of American Jews and the important role that members of the Jewish community have played in the development of American culture.
Last Thursday, President Bush proclaimed that May would be Jewish American Heritage Month. The announcement was the culmination of an effort originated by the Jewish Museum of Florida and South Florida Jewish community leaders and resulted in resolutions introduced by U.S. Rep. Wasserman Schultz and U.S. Senator Arlen Specter that urged the President to proclaim a month that would recognize the 352 year history of Jewish contributions to American culture. The resolutions passed unanimously, first in the House of Representatives last December, and later in the Senate this February.
"This is an historic occasion," said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. "Generations to come will have the chance to live without anti-Semitism through greater understanding and awareness of the significant role that American Jews have played in U.S. history. Jewish American Heritage Month is a reality because of the people gathered today in this room."
The President's proclamation highlighted both the contributions of American Jews to American culture and the importance of the observance of this month.
"The Jewish people have enriched our culture and contributed to a more compassionate and hopeful America," President Bush stated in his proclamation. "I call upon all Americans to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities that honor the significant contributions Jewish Americans have made to our nation."
While modeled after Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and Women's History Month, Jewish American Heritage Month may actually have a greater challenge ahead of it because of the small percentage of Jews in America.
"The very synagogue that we stand in today, now the home of the Jewish Museum of Florida, was built here because Jews were not allowed to live north of 5th Street in Miami Beach," said Marcia Zerivitz, Founding Executive Director & Chief Curator, Jewish Museum of Florida. "Mark Twain once said that all of Jews accomplishments were made with our hands tied behind our backs."
"While only 2% of the population, Jews have played a vital role in every aspect of American culture, from the westward expansion to advances in medicine to such quintessentially American symbols as the song God Bless America," said Rep. Wasserman Schultz.
Many Americans have very little understanding of Jewish culture simply because the majority of Americans have few interactions with Jews or Jewish traditions.
"To most Americans, Judaism is only a religion," said Michael Adler, President of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. "In reality, Judaism is a religion, a rich tradition, and a culture that dates back over 4,000 years. It is my hope that Jewish American Heritage Month will help the majority of Americans better understand both Jews and our contributions to American history."
It is hoped that the creation of Jewish American Heritage Month will serve as a catalyst for educators and others to further the understanding of the role that Jews have played in American history.
"Our nation's limited understanding of American Jews and their cultural and historical roles in our country's development leads to ignorance, which contributes to stereotypes and prejudices," said Stanley Tate, a member of the Advisory Council of the Jewish Museum of Florida. "We owe it to the next generation to include the contributions of all Americans in our discussions of history."
"For too long American Jews have felt content to stand in the background of American history," said Jimmy Resnick, a South Florida Jewish community leader. "For instance, Florida's first Senator David Levy Yulee, was a Jew and also happened to be the first Jewish member of Congress. This kind of history is unknown to most Floridians, let alone Americans, yet it is an integral part of our state and the nation. This month will help Americans understand the important role Jews have played in America."
