how to create thumbnail for video files that is to be dispalyed on the browser using php

this would take the support of many extra libraries not available in a standard php bundle.  If you have the power to install new libraries, let me know, and I can elaborate.

You could always manually do it/make a thumbnail image be uploaded with a video.

You can use ffmpeg.
Once it's installed on your server, you can use it in PHP by writing a command line, and calling exec on it.
e.g.:
exec ('ffmpeg -i mymovie.mov -vcodec mjpeg -vframes 1 -an -f rawvideo -s 64x64 foo
